More than 200 citizen scientists participated in the 2009-2010 Northern Channel Islands Loggerhead Shrike study on Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz Islands. The purpose of the project was to obtain a rigorous and defensible estimate of northern island loggerhead shrike abundance on both islands. Volunteers selected for this project were required to have intermediate to advanced experience counting and identifying bird species by sight and sound, as well as in hiking over rough terrain without trails, and using topographic maps and hand-held GPS units. Project methodology, results, and volunteer feedback are summarized in the briefings available from the menu to the right. You can also learn more on the project's Facebook page.
