Deer Mouse Long-term Monitoring

The Mediterranean Coast Network Inventory & Monitoring Program oversees the deer mouse monitoring protocol. The protocol is being implemented at the following parks:

Channel Islands National Park
Deer mice populations at Channel Islands National Park have been monitored on three of the park’s islands approximately annually since 1992. Biologists are monitoring indicators of mouse population size, how mouse densities change over time, and general mouse health (e.g. weight, age, and reproductive status). Because mouse population dynamics vary in response to numerous factors, including predator abundance and diversity, vegetation, and climate, results from monitoring deer mice will help us understand how the ecosystems are changing in response to climate change and the removal of feral and non-native animals.
