The Mediterranean Coast Network Inventory & Monitoring Program oversees the invasive plants monitoring protocol. The protocol is being implemented at the following parks:

Channel Islands National Park
Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area

The invasive plants monitoring program focuses on those species that have the greatest potential to impact native and/or sensitive ecosystemssuch as giant reed (Arundo donax), pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana), and yellow star thistle (Centaurea solstitialis), and that can be managed given each park's limited resources. The program strives to understand where invasive species are and how they spread park-wide, but has also developed an early detection reporting and tracking system that disseminates information to park management on new infestations of especially troublesome invasive species so that they canrespond quickly to those threats.
