The Mediterranean Coast Network Inventory & Monitoring Program oversees the pinniped monitoring protocol. The protocol is being implemented at the following parks:

Channel Islands National Park
The park, with its partners, have been monitoring the four most abundant species at the Channel Islands for over 30 years: California sea lions, northern elephant seals, harbor seals, and northern fur seals. Ground surveys and aerial photos are used to count pups and adults and to see where the animals are along the shoreline. This information is then used to estimate trends in pinniped abundance, population age structure, and annual reproductive timing and productivity. Learn more
